Painting washes in watercolor offers several advantages, particularly when creating a sunset or setting a mood in a painting. The transparency of watercolors allows you to evoke different atmospheric effects. For a sunset, applying a wash that fades from warm colors near the horizon to cooler colors (such as blues or purples) higher up can convey the changing light and the peacefulness of dusk.
Expressing a sense of serenity
Learn to create washes with smooth, seamless transitions of color and gentle blending, which is ideal for capturing the soft gradients of a sunset sky.
The soft, flowing nature of watercolor washes lends itself well to conveying mood. A sunset can be depicted with vibrant, intense washes to evoke a sense of awe and drama or with gentle, muted washes to create a serene and calming mood. The choice of colors and the way they blend together can greatly influence the emotional impact of the painting.
