Painting washes in watercolor offers several advantages, particularly when creating a sunset or setting a mood in a painting. The transparency of watercolors allows you to evoke different atmospheric effects. For a sunset, applying a wash that fades from warm colors near the horizon to cooler colors (such as blues or purples) higher up can convey the changing light and the peacefulness of dusk.
